“A Hot Mess Inside A Dumpster Fire Inside A Train Wreck”

18”x12”
Ink on wood panels; 2020

Time for some nostalgia; remember the first Presidential debate back in September 2020? It was so awful (or at least, what passed for “awful” at the time) that Jake Tapper of CNN called it “a hot mess inside a dumpster fire inside a train wreck”, and I was commissioned by him to immortalize that event in the piece you see here.

In the time it took me to organize this illustration, new events kept happening, each weirder than the last, that forced me to keep updating the composition until I finally had to give up and declare it “done” (just like we were all thrilled to do with 2020 in general).

Anyway, now the events of the fall of 2020 seem almost quaint in comparison to what went down on January 6th, 2021. So I present to you this relic from the past; may we learn from our mistakes and not repeat them.
